Re: Mayor Proposes Drive-thru Tax April 1.
I am a young mother of two in a lower-middle income family. Drive-thrus are a blessing to me.
I use the drive-thru teller machine at my local bank almost daily.
As most mothers know, having to drag your children into a bank and then wait in the gruelling line-up with them can be a real nightmare. And what about those times when I just want a quick lunch between preschool and grocery shopping? Or a quick coffee to keep me awake? If I have to pay a five per cent tax in these drive-thrus, these luxuries will no
longer be a blessing, they will be an inconvenient chore.
I also work as a support assistant with individuals who have disabilities. Drive-thrus are very convenient for these individuals to independently do their personal banking and enjoy fast food like all other citizens. Why should the disabled have to pay more than the rest of the community for these services?
I am also blessed to still enjoy spending time with my grandparents, who in their senior years spend less time cooking for themselves and enjoy the luxury of using a drive-thru to order and pay for their meals and avoiding the hassle of finding good parking and standing in long line-ups at banks. I feel seniors should be treated equally and respectfully in our community and city council should be able to provide this very important convenience to all seniors without charging an unfair fee.
It is my opinion Mayor Ellis is trying to increase revenue while emptying the pockets of workingclass families, our seniors and the disabled.
