Sen. Barack Obama’s announcement earlier today that he’s selected Delaware Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate has been positively received by state leaders of the Democratic Party, while the New York Republican Committee chair pointed out Biden’s past criticism of Obama.
June O’Neill, state Democratic Committe chairwoman, issued a statement praising “Biden’s vast knowledge of foreign policy’’ and described him as “a true asset to the ticket.’‘
“All New York State Democrats look forward to campaigning for the Obama-Biden ticket and seeing them to victory in November, ‘’ O’Neill stated.
“The bottom line is Sen. Obama made an excellent choice,’’ stated Sen. Chuck Schumer. “He picked the cream of the crop. Joe has more than 30 years of legislative and foreign policy experience, is a leader on a wide range of issues and is respected in foreign capitals across the globe. Above all, Joe Biden is a straight talker who speaks directly to and understands middle class families in his home state of Delaware and across the country. I’m looking forward to seeing them both in Denver next week and then the White House in January.”
Joseph Mondello, New York Republican State Committee chairman, took note of Biden’s comment during the early campaign for the nomination that Obama wasn’t ready to be president and has criticized Obama on foreign policy.
“Barack Obama’s campaign leaked the announcement to the media, even after collecting the personal phone numbers of supporters with the promise that they would be the first to know,’’ said Mondello. “This once again highlights Barack Obama’s misplaced thirst for headlines over delivering on promises to real people. The vice presidential decision, and how it was announced, will continue the confusion and disunity within the Democratic Party.’’
According to Mondello, Republicans are unified behind John McCain’s presidential campaign. “The Republican Party has the unity and organization we need to be successful this fall here in New York and across the country,’’ he stated.
