Broadcaster Dermot Murnaghan explains why Dingle Bay, on the west coast of Ireland, makes for perfect family holidays.

I love the west of Ireland, and Co Kerry in particular, which my family and I have been visiting every summer now for a few years and all think is absolutely idyllic.

What makes it so special? For a start, it has a stunning location on the Atlantic coast, between the mountains and the sea. And it suits the six of us – my wife, me, our son and three daughters. It’s easy to get to by car – it’s just a ferry ride away. And it’s a bit like Britain in the old days.

You could describe our trips as old-fashioned “bucket-and-spade” holidays, but while many families seem to go for full-on Disneyland-type vacations these days, if you like rock pools and mountains and waterfalls, Co Kerry, and the Dingle Bay area in particular, has it all. Give our children a net and they’re happy to spend the afternoon messing about in a pool.
